The University of Hyderabad

The University of Hyderabad, a premier institution of post graduate teaching and research in the country, was established by an Act of Parliament on 3rd September, 1974 as a Central University, wholly financed by the University Grants Commission.
With over 40 different Departments and Centres organized in 12 Schools of study, the University has over 400 faculty and over 5000 students from all over India and abroad, with administrative officers and support staff that keep the system running. The University offers more than 120 different programmes of study ranging from doctoral studies to Masters level degrees including a thriving Five-Year Integrated Masters Programme. UoH also hosts a variety of postgraduate diplomas and short-term courses through the Distance mode. UoH is one of the few truly multidisciplinary institutions of the country which has adopted the NEP in letter and spirit and encourages students to take courses cutting across disciplines with special focus on students from socio-economically challenged backgrounds. It hosts an ever-increasing number of foreign scholars in the highly popular Study in India Programme.
The University was accorded the status of Institution of eminence (IoE) in 2019 in recognition of its achievements and is one only three central universities to be awarded this status. As an IoE, the University has made rapid progress in research, established modern infrastructure, organized over 100 national and international conferences, funded skill development and other teaching programmes and provided assistance to its faculty and students through a variety of schemes. As the University celebrates its golden jubilee, all this is expected to have an even greater impact on the University’s standing nationally and globally, in the future.
The faculty of the University have a high national and international profile and have been recipients of major national and international awards – the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, J C Bose Fellowship, Humboldt Prize, TWAS Awards, Visitor’s Awards and the Padma Awards. Several of our faculty are fellows or associate fellows of major national and international Academies. Our alumni dot the upper echelons of universities, publishing houses, laboratories and scientific institutions, from Hyderabad to the entire world.
The university’s commitment is to fashion a unique and excellent research University which is not only an asset for the country but also a role model for other institutions. This is embodied in the tagline “National Needs, Global Standards” and the motto of the University which is “Sa vidya ya vimuktaye” Or real education is that, which acts as an instrument of liberation.
