Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST)

IIEST-2

The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur, formerly known as Bengal Engineering College (BEC), was established in 1856 and is recognized as one of India’s oldest and most esteemed engineering institutions. Initially affiliated with Calcutta University, the institute attained autonomous (Deemed) university status in 1992. In October 2004, it was officially transformed into a full-fledged state university, named Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur (BESUS), through legislation passed by the state assembly. In 2003, the Government of India selected a few premier Institutes  along with the Bengal Engineering College, Howrah to submit Vision Documents, under the Directive  of the then Prime Minister Honorable Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, for transition to a world-class Engineering Institute. Finally, in March 2014, this distinguished institution was designated as an Institute of National Importance by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, adopting its current name, the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur through necessary enactment in the Parliament of India. Hon. Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India inaugurated the  first IIEST of the nation on August 24th 2014. In his inaugural speech he stressed on the importance of Quality Education.
