The Institute of Advanced Research (IAR) is an innovation-driven university. Its foundation stone was laid by Honourable Shri Narendra Modi (then Chief Minister of Gujarat) in 2003, and it was formally inaugurated in 2006 by Honourable Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, then President of India. The university is financially supported by the Puri Foundation for Education in India, a charitable trust led by UK-based industrialist Prof. Nathu Ram Puri.
